How to live through a Dubai summer without hating the city
May to September is indoor life. Water, shade, early mornings, a mall, and a cheap indoor plan. August is not a verdict on the whole year.
A Dubai summer is not a personality test. It is weather. From about May to September the outdoor city closes itself between ten and five. People who grew up with rain treat this as a scandal. People who stay treat it like snow in another country: you change the kit and you keep the week.
Carry water. Do not run at noon. Park in shade if you can. The car will still be an oven; remote start or a sunshade is not luxury, it is how you do not burn your hands. Children and older relatives need extra care. The sea in the afternoon can feel like soup. Swim early or after the sun drops. Lifeguards and flags still matter — heat does not cancel current.
A working summer week
- Walk or gym at 5:30, or after 7pm.
- Malls, metro, and offices are the daytime city.
- DEWA bills rise. Factor AC. Do not leave windows open ‘for a breeze’.
- Eat indoors. Food poisoning from a hot car picnic is a real way to ruin Friday.
- If you can take leave home, August is the month a lot of the city does.
This is also why malls are infrastructure, not a joke. They are the public square when the square is 45 degrees. Metro is air-conditioned transport. A villa with a long unshaded walk to the gate is a different summer from a JLT tower over a station. Pick housing with the season in mind if you arrive in June.
November through March is the apology the climate makes: outdoor restaurants, beaches, marathons, the Fitness Challenge. If you only saw August, you did not see Dubai. Stay through one winter before you write the city off. If after that winter you still want rain and a high street, you have an honest answer, not a heat-stroke one.
Best time to move is often September–November. If you land in July, pick a metro area and an indoor gym in week one.
People also ask
- How hot is Dubai in summer?
- Very. May to September is heat and humidity. Midday outdoor sport is a bad idea. Early morning and late evening only. Cars and malls are how the city functions.
- Is summer a bad time to move to Dubai?
- It is a harder landing, not a wrong one. You will live indoors more. Rent can be slightly kinder. Winter is when you fall in love with the place.
