The first 72 hours, without the panic

What to do in order when the plane doors open at DXB and your brain is still in another timezone.

Most people do not fail Dubai in month six. They get confused in the first three days: the wrong SIM, a taxi they cannot afford, a WhatsApp group that wants their passport, and a hotel they cannot extend. This is the boring sequence that prevents that.

Hour 0 — the hall

  • You land at T1 or T3 if you are on a normal long-haul. Follow residence / visit as your visa actually is — they are not interchangeable counters.
  • Buy a tourist SIM only if your employer has not already sorted e& or du. You need ID. The airport price is worse than a mall; it is also 01:00 and you need maps.
  • Red Line metro serves T1 and T3. If you have two suitcases and a Sunday 08:30 arrival, a pre-booked Careem is not a moral failure.

Day 1 — sleep and a map

Do not sign a year of rent on day one. Sleep near a Red Line station if you can: Barsha, Business Bay, Deira, Marina. Walk the station, buy a Silver NOL (AED 25, AED 19 of that is credit), and ride one stop just to learn the gates. Gold cabin is the end car. Do not sit there on Silver.

Eat something ordinary. A cafeteria meal will teach you more about the city than a hotel buffet. Karama, Deira and International City still feed people for AED 15–25. Downtown will not.

Day 2 — the employer stack

If you are here to work, the second day belongs to HR: medical fitness, Emirates ID biometrics, the contract you actually signed. Take originals. Do not hand your passport to anyone who is not on the offer letter. A PRO is a process person, not a friend who needs a ‘deposit’.

If anyone — including someone using the words Move to Dubai — asks you to pay a visa fee on WhatsApp, it is a scam. We do not process visas.

Day 3 — money and a SIM that lasts

Banks want Emirates ID in progress or issued. That is why day 3 is often still cash, Wise, or a home-country card with a terrible FX rate. Pick one mall with a metro (Mall of the Emirates is the least annoying) and do SIM + a cheap prepaid card + a notepad of DEWA / Ejari words you will need next week.

Then stop. The city is hot from May to September. The work of arriving is enough. The metro will still be there at 05:00 tomorrow.
