Malls are infrastructure
You will do banking, SIM cards, groceries and walking here — not because you love shopping.
People mock Dubai for malls until August. Then they understand. From May to September the air-conditioned indoor street is how a city of outdoor heat still functions.
Use them like a high street
Mall of the Emirates sits on the Red Line. Dubai Mall is the Downtown errand. Ibn Battuta covers the Jebel Ali side. City Centre Deira is older and denser. Dubai Hills Mall is what suburban life looks like when there is no metro in the lobby.
First week errands that belong in a mall: SIM, a cheap phone cable, a lock for the suitcase, a SIM-sized bank conversation, a supermarket shop you can carry on the metro. Dragon Mart is the other errand — lamps, hangers, a drying rack — if you live towards International City.
Do not live in them
A Saturday in City Walk is a pleasure. A life that is only malls is how people get lonely. Find the creek abra, a public beach, and one cafeteria that knows your order. The mall will still be there when the temperature is 42.
