Sharing a room without fooling yourself
Bed spaces are how many salaries work. They are also how people lose a deposit and meet an inspector.
Dubai is inspecting overcrowded shared housing, including by surprise. That is not a rumour we invented this week — it is in the local papers. If your plan is eight mattresses and a Facebook group, read this before you send a deposit.
Legal enough to sleep
- Ejari is the tenancy registration. If nobody in the flat has it, you have no official footing.
- Your name on a contract beats a verbal ‘you can stay, brother’.
- Staff accommodation through an employer is a different product — still ask where it is, how many to a room, and whether women/men are split.
The money
A partitioned bed space can be AED 700–1,800 depending on area. A room share in JVC or International City is the common middle. Paying a year cash to a number that is not a landlord or a licensed agent is how people get stranded.
Never send a deposit on WhatsApp to someone you have not met at the door, with the building and the room in frame, and a contract you can photograph.
When sharing is the right call
If the calculator says leftover under AED 2,500, sharing is not a failure. It is the city telling you the truth. Do it with a lock on your cupboard, a written house rule, and an exit plan for month three when you know the commute.
